Description

There stands the remnants of a town, lost to the ages. It is up to the group to reconstruct the town, working off bits of clues and rumors to determine the exact makeup of "Old Town". At the start of the game, the players are presented with almost no information, just a map with the outlines of a few old roads and markers that once stood. Players progress the game using cards which define relationships between buildings on the board. Soon,_they will begin to reconstruct the exact locations of the buildings that once made up this old frontier town until all of the buildings are in place._
Old Town is a proof game, one in which the players construct the rules that define the locations of the buildings. While that may sound easy, it is far from it. The game mechanics are challenging, engaging and present a_wonderful exercise in logic for learners. While this could be a dry exercise, the game's_theme and scoring opportunities challenge players to be efficient with their rules additions, rewarding them for_eliminating as many possibilities for locations as they can each turn. To do this, each player has a hand of cards with rules that can be applied to the buildings they have in front of them._For example a card could say: "The entrance to the building was facing north." Each card defines how a building a player has relates to other landmarks or buildings on the board. To help, each building comes with a number of tokens that are used to help players visualize the possible locations that a building can be on the board. As each of the players use more cards, the possible locations for buildings are removed as they conflict with new rules that are introduced. Once there is only one possible location for a building, its location has been set.
Games can be excellent tools for challenging concepts. Helping learners understand logic and proofs can be channeling. Often times, problems and exercises involve tables and mental gymnastics which can be intimidating. Old Town explores these concepts in a very tangible manner and the inclusion of tokens for tracking possible locations helps players visualize and see the interactions of rules. Old Town would be a great group activity for the classroom and there are a number of solo scenarios that can be explored a group of students working together to solve the problem.
